I think that "foldboat" is an English translation of the German "faltboot" which is a kayak made of a rubberised canvas skin on a collapsible frame. Klepper, a German company, claim to have started manufacturing them back in 1907. Modern ones are very impressive (and expensive) pieces of kit.
It was misleading of me to describe Mac's tub as a "foldboat" especially as I half knew the kayak connection, my parents had many adventures in them and I have happy memories of using one as a teenager.Eventually it was stolen from the roof of our car; the spread of cars and roofracks has made foldboats less useful.
