Actually the "old" website wasn't originally a "TARS" website but an Arthur Ransome site, and by intention had a lot of stuff which wasn't necessarily TARS either in origin or intention. A new separate TARS site could have been implemented, still leaving the old site available - but I suspect there weren't any attractive URLs (domain names) left available, and in any case arthur-ransome.org was the one everyone knew.

I believe that TARS' intent is to reincarnate much of the old material on the new site at some point, but I have no idea when it might happen, or what parts would appear and what might not.

It would also be possible to start up a "new" non-TARS site for that material if it were still available and if TARS took a decision that its site would remain pretty specifically TARS-related and leave the rest of the stuff to another site and support folks. However that is NOT a statement of intent (or of volunteering).
