i'm not entirely sure about Commander of Ganges being as good a role as it appears to be; Dartmouth term officer certainly becomes a less attractive prospect on closer examination

The Commander - Executive Officer - would be senior to a term officer, at Shotley as at Dartmouth.

Ted Walker might well havc considered that training the next generation of sailors - who would as it happened have been at the peak of their careers when the war broke out - was just as important as training the officers.

I have often wondered about the background to his appointment at Shotley. His ship had only just moved to the far East, yet here he is summoned home with the greatest urgency - travelling overland and with no opportunity for leave. Had some emergency - even scandal - occurred at Ganges, causing Captain Curtledge to insist to the Admiralty that his old friend (WD) Ted Walker was the only officer he could trust to put matters right?
