Hi, Ed. I understand what you're saying, but I think there were nevertheless some real 'plusses'. I haven't seen the film for some time, and yet still remember some ways in which the soundtrack 'made' some moments - for instance, the first time the Swallows see what is to be 'their island', and where the soundtrack takes over from their singing 'Spanish Ladies'. I tend always to be disappointed by seeing a film after a book, although two notable exceptions for me are 'Riddle of the Sands' starring Michael York, Simon McCorkingdale(?), Jenny Agutter, and Lionel Jeffries' 'Railway Children' which actually added extra dimensions for me - others may well not agree!
