Thinking about it, the ranks and designations that the Swallows and Amazons use are more reflective of the merchant navy rather than the Royal Navy. John is described as the Master not the Captain of the Swallow in the ship's articles, although given the courtesy title of captain. Susan isn't the lieutenant, she is the mate. That is not to say that the merchant navy was not as authoritarian as the military compared to pirates.
