Thanks, Ed. I wonder what word Pete could use today to have the same meaning that would be acceptable to the PC lobby ? I don't see that his impression that the photo showed people of sub-Saharan origin is inappropriate in any way - Ransome's main aim was to demonstrate that Pete was unfamiliar with the idea of a negative photographic image - but how could someone express that nowadays ? (It is a curious thought that children in the 1950s and 1960s would have probably been totally familiar with photo negatives, whereas in today's digital age they would probably be as bemused as Pete was).
