If you look at the map contained within Chapter VII of P&M, which is the largest scale map of the area that I can recall, it seems that the front of the house faces SE. the lawn side faces NE.
The lawn cannot have been a sunny spot, except in the height of summer, with that orientation. Rooms facing the lawn must have been gloomy except in the early morning.
It is also noticeable that there a smaller building abutting the main house. This would be the kitchen block & servants quarters. It would probably also contain a scullery for clothes and plate washing.
Incidentally, whist discussing nomenclature how did stairwell instead of staircase get into the subject heading?
