It is quite wrong, surely, to regard the G.A.'s behaviour as typical of the family.

Peter, my message 28793 was meant to refer to the Turners, Maria and James not to the whole family. I did qualify "Turners" wth the description "at their worst". I'm sorry if my meaning was not clear to you.

In any case, I do not regard the G.A. as a 'toff'. She seems to me more like a petty bourgeois person, and a snob. A 'toff' is quite different, ie 'a distinguished person, a swell' (OED). The G.A. is neither. Case dismissed.

If you read my post carefully you will see that I did not claim that the GA was a toff, merely that her behaviour was 'toffish" - a made up word which I meant to mean "having certain aspects of a toff". And before anyone quotes Wittgenstein regarding private language please take some time to consider this.
