However it would appear that it does exist in Oxford (where, of course, the education is velly poor but the marmalade is velly good). According to THE OXFORD DICTIONARY FOR WRITERS AND EDITORS the approved abbreviations are:

Cdr. = Commander
Cdre. = Commodore (naval)
Cmdr. = Commodore (naval)

This is of course of no help whatsoever to the poor baffled editor, so I am off to sulk.
