Thank you for this, Alan. It does explain how the link disappeared but not why. As you correctly say, it's retention would have avoided many questions.
Perhaps it ties in with AR's desire that the books be read in order and so any linking help was removed.
I confirm that the page order in my 1937 printing is the same as your 1941 printing.
Another change is that the spine base of the 1932 printing has JONATHAN CAPE stamped thereon whilst the 1937 printing has the familar antique flower vase.
