I guess I was about 10 when I found the books in my library. I noticed there was no mention of this--not even one of the children (Roger, most likely!) needing to "go" asap. My father being a U.S. Forest Service ranger, I became accustomed early on to using whatever we had at hand--often pit toilets or shallow digging off the trail and away from water sources, covered with dirt & duff from the forest floor. I assumed that was what the children did, and I was perfectly happy to quit thinking about the mystery at that point. I expect few childhood AR readers have any concern about the "reality" of the stories. I know I was a bit disappointed to discover that PD was a made-up story....it seemed so "real" to me the first time I read it!
