Hmm. Although the downstream plumbing arrangements in Hogwart's play an important part in the Potter plots, I have yet to be convinced that children will necessarily think twice about their omission in the Swallows and Amazon books. None of the other books that I read as a child went into the details of toilet arrangements regardless of whether they waxed lyrical on easing guy ropes or other arcane camping details. I never considered this a serious omission. AR's non-treatment of this topic was simply following the custom and practice of the time.
