I suspect everyone used the lake

Oo I'm not sure about that, Owen. The Swallows bathed in the lake. Perhaps they avoided a certain area? But John swam right round the island on one occasion. How long does it take for solid waste to disperse in freshwater? Maybe the children weren't squeamish . .

Hmm, in contrast I note that this topic makes some TarBoarders rather edgy . . . . and we take refuge in Shakespeare?!?! No, I'm sticking with this practical and relevant problem. The point is that AR described all the minutiae of camp life - brushing teeth, bathing, washing up, clearing litter, putting up tents etc. He left this basic topic out, and it is the first thing most children will think about.
