In fact, no mention is made of the children taking a spade with them to the island. Surely it would be essential on an island to have a ‘designated’ latrine area, otherwise things might get a little unpleasant when exploring.

I suspect everyone used the lake rather than going digging. ISTR reading that AR used a jam tin and dumped the contents over the side whilst dingy sailing and this was a reason why he would not sail with ladies in later years. I understand this practice is atill prevalent today.
1930's campers liked running water, but always collected water upstream of the disposal point.
In the 1930's there were no regulations about direct sewage discharge from boats into rivers and lakes. I am not sure when these regulations were introduced on the broads and presumably the lakes - 1970's?
