In chapter XI of SA, Peggy says of the barrel or rather the puncheon of Jamica rum (which cook calls lemonade) that it was meant as a water breaker, as the natives thought that the lake water was not fit to drink.
But as they always drank the water boiled for tea not straight out of the lake, they use the water breaker ‘ as a puncheon for feastable drinks.’
