For many novels, yes. It allows both the multiple points-of-view and gives a chance for the omniscient narrator to step in when needed. In a first-person novel, you only know what the character does- probably why it's a popular format for mysteries.

Personally, I often find novels that use multiple first-person POV to be confusing- it's tiring being in so many people's heads.
