I know I was being provocative but it was a genuine question. On the face of it the two series follow a very similar format do they not? Hero and side-kick rise through the ranks of Nelson's navy. This seems more than genre similarity. To answer Alan's question, no I have never read O'Brian's work but lots of people whose opinion I respect, seem to like them, including many Tarboardistas, so I was hoping that I might be persuaded. As for my assumptions, I assume that the similarity in formats has been commented on before and provoked some sort of standard explanatory narrative. If so, I am curious to hear it and no, I have no intention of visiting an O'Brian discussion group!
