Anybody remember the Buncle books by MM Pardoe in the 1950s? In one of those, the children were hiding up in a barn waiting for some baddies to show up, or whatever and eventually feel the need... and relieve it, remarking as they do so "Why doesn't anyone in books ever have this problem?" It was one of the things that endeared the series to me, another being a beautiful line drawing of a Standard Vanguard estate car. If aybody has any copies they don't want...PS If the Swallows and Amazons had been allowed to attend to these bodily functions on-page, so to speak, I hope they would have come up with a more piratical expression for it than "Going to the Bathroom".
PPS (and reverting to another thread)- they do get mentioned in LOTF
