I confess that I may be projecting my (AR inspired) anti-motor sentiments on to the author himself. The passages quoted do suggested that AR had some sort of interest in and understanding of driving, although I suspect that he may have considered an interest in makes of cars as being more suitable for the likes of Roger rather than grown men.
The OP [sorry too lazy to look you up] does point to an interesting transition between the horse and carriage in SD and Rattletrap in PP. To me it suggests that the early books, at least, reflect AR's own childhood whereas laterin hte series he becomes more concerned with allowing his characters to have lives of their own.
