If the epicyclic gearbox was damaged enough to cause "crashes" the car would not be drivable.
Gearbox crashes are caused when moving one set of gears to mesh with another on the move, and the two sets are not synchronised.
The beauty of an epicyclic gear train is that the gears are never moved out of mesh with each other. The different ratios are obtained by clamping the outer gears with brake bands in different arrangements. Clashing is impossible.
