The picture in BS clearly shows the faces of the culprits turned towards the camera, and therefore identifiable.

Perhaps the loud click mentioned in the text alerted them in time for them to turn before the flash went off.

I'm not so sure about Owdon and Strakey's defence in court. They had positively identified to the Police the D & Gs as having pushed the Cachalot off - yet her owner would have testified in Court - as he does in the book, that he had lent her to the boys. For what reason would they have pushed her off in the middle of the night, to go nowhere since they had previously anchored her safely?
