As well as musicals a la Hollywood, you might include opera. Now there is art trying to imiates life and failing miserably. But in that faulure came forth a magnificent art form quite independent of real life. I submit that musicals, just one step removed from opera, have become another such art form. Ddon't look for reality, just listen to the songs. On the other hand, I agree, how can you sing and dance about poverty, disease and hunger? How can you spend ten minutes dying, while singing an aria at the top of your voice? Of course, they have little to do with reality. Bur opera and musicals, in fact, all forms of art, serve another purpose entirely. And that purpose is of vital importance.
