I had always heard that back in the day when MGM and Warner Bros. turned out musical after musical that these pictures did not do well in Europe where people could not comprehend otherwise sensible people suddenly breaking into song while walking down the street or otherwise engaged in mundane activities. Whew! I'd hate to diagram that sentence.
