I can't say that I have a lot of sympathy.
My parents' house in the Lake District had a footpath running through the garden, and in fact there was an alternative and more convenient route which wasn't a public footpath which people used even more often. So what? My parents never looked on the public as 'abusing' anything just because people crossed their land to reach the fell.
