I think it comes down to it being the parents who really guide a childs learning. If the parents are involved and interested, their children will follow in thier footsteps. If the parents care less, then the same for the children, no matter what the schools and teachers do. This teacher must be going only by the "book" and in our system it is easier to follow the curriculum guide than to be creative with it. Isn't there an old saying, Ignorance begats Ignorance or something to that effect?

It usually seems to be difficult to spread interest in anything beyond the pop culture aspects. If you could get Britney Spears or Paris Hilton to advocate the Arthur Ransome books, they they would be flying off the shelves faster than they could print them! (I secretly wonder if those two can even read!)

I had never heard of FLASHMAN; but will give him a look - - from the Wikipedia listing, he sounds like a real scoundrel!
