But John, 'class prejudice' is almost totally absent from AR's stories. There is a bit of institutional deference, but here AR is simply reflecting current customs. Even the author of the Mixed Moss article which is under discussion admits that "One thing we don't see in the Ransome books is snobbery" As this hapless author has taken a bit of a hammering lately, I am happy to agree with his concluding statements - eg "Jackie, Slater Bob and the Billies are interesting people from whom [the children] learn, not yokels to patronise.

There are exceptions, but Ransome makes sure they get their come-uppance - eg the Hullabaloos, and George OwdOn.
