I love them all for their own reasons, but when head to the shelf to pick one to read, I tend to go for the later books, especially PP, PM, BS, SW & GN? They all have complex & interesting plots, great characters, clever wording and great endings. I admit to knowing SA too well, and it really is less complex. I used to like SD best--the finding of the valley, shipwreck, exploration, avoiding the GA--but I guess I have read it so many times I remember every twist before I read it now. Perhaps in a few years.... My least favorite is PD, probably due to lack of interest in the pirates/treasure theme. I haven't ever read Robinson Crusoe either, although I have started it several times. Coot Club is fine as an introduction to the Broads, but BS takes the cake there with its scientific detecting approach, and Dorothea's jump to the lead for once. ML is a bit too fantastical for my love of "real" stories :-) My favorite? It has changed through my life, but for now it is PM. Something about the ancient history of the Picts, and the humorous attempts of the Martyrs, plus we get to know more people and places around The Lake, adding to our internal pictures of this landscape AR feeds into our hearts & souls.
