As I know essentially nothing about the Public School system, feel free to educate me.
Certainly at the Public School I attended, birthdays were totally ignored. One did not generally mention it.
On the other hand there might be a welcome postal or money order from one's parents, if a card was included it would not be displayed.
One might use some of the proceeds from the postal order to buy a feast for very close friends.
Other presents from relatives and friends would be opened when one next returned home.
Games masters would be aware of birthdays, one could not longer play for school under 16 (or other specified age) teams once one had reached that age. This was very strictly observed.
My own two adult children do not (and never did) remember each other's birthdays unless reminded by my wife.
