Indeed, chocolate, like coffee, is toxic for dogs (theobromides are the culprits). Unfortunately, one of ourt dogs has a passion for both. Fortunately, when she has indulged (without our consent, or presence), it's been in such excess that she's effectively also supplied the antidote without our needing to find the ipecac.

As an aside, grapes and raisins are also poisonous for dogs, leading to kidney failure.
