Perhaps (Dick) was in the habit of developing films by inspection?

Reading the very detailed account in BS (JC 1948 p374 onwards, 'In the Darkroom), that's exactly what he did.

Also, those Ortho emulsions would have had a great deal of latitude. My first camera was an Nth hand Leica 1. No rangefinder, no exposure meter, no slow speeds, nothing. I used Plus-X (this was around 1950). My dad gave me some rough settings. Whatever the conditions, the results were suprisingly okay.
