Fully agree with you, Jock. I cycled to school every day when I was a kid, but now bikes are not seen as a means of transport but an exercise machine. Here in Melbourne we have a programme being promoted by the Health Dept., called "The Walking Bus", where children going to school will gather in groups [as at a bus stop] and then walk to school under the supervision of a few parents. The same dept are having an uphill battle to promote bicycles as a means of urban transport to combat traffic congestion and atmospheric pollution. I'd like to use my bike to go into our village shops for light errands, but I can't be sure that my bike will still be there when I come out of the shop.
David.
