As I recall, Pauline Marshall maintained that the stepping of the mast was different in each boat. Amazon as drawn by AR, has the mast stepped through the thwart:-
I can't check this detail on Mavis as I don't have Yahoo access to see Matthew's picture. But I think you'll find that the mast is not stepped through the for'ard thwart.
(Personal note - all this doesn't worry me, as my Amazon is in my head, but I was fond of Pauline and I feel I ought to try and put her point of view.)
