The life of a foreign correspondent was one that Ransome knew all about, which is one thing. It required extensive and erratic foreign travel, which is another, and he greatly admired EF Knight, a remarkably interesting man, whose Wikipedia entry needs expansion - I am relying on one of AR's own Mariner's Library prefaces for Knight's life history - but I think we have an almost perfect match between the fictional James Turner and the real Edward Frederick Knight.

I claim Christina Hardyment in support (see p178 of Captain Flint's Trunk: "...one of Ransome's great heroes...Knight had the health, energy and money to grab the chances of adventure that Ransome could only write about longingly...")

Putting it together, including the knowledge of sailing, "fetching a bump against the coast of Java in a ship's boat" (a very EF Knight-ish thing to do) and the writing of a book of his adventures, I think that James Turner is very closely modelled on EF Knight.
