In Chapter 2 of SD, as they return to Wild Cat Island, and feel the delight of being back "home" Titty responds in a manner that Ransome described of himself, when he first returned to the lake, celebrating that return by dipping a hand into the lake, just as if to make sure it is all real.
"To be back on Wild Cat Island was almost
too good to be true. Titty dipped her hands in the cool water
of the harbour, just to show herself that she was really there."
Ransome wrote there of his own feelings, but just gave the job to Titty to carry that torch.
