And something that that he was doing himself, as he wrote.

I think that in the books, as well as earning a living, he was creating a sanctuary for himself. For a direct passage illustrating that, think of the Ds settling for their first night at Beckfoot, after arriving from London. PM, JC 1948, the last page of Ch.2 'The Visitors Arrive'. A lovely dreamy, secure recognition of welcoming evening sounds and smells. Superb, and a better description of sanctuary I have rarely seen. And although it was describing the Ds' experience, I'm sure he was making himself happy too.
