I would agree with Peter that children now still find magic of their own in the books they befriend during their childhoods. When I was an avid child reader, few of my friends and classmates read as much as I did. I only felt a bit sorry for them, not worried about the loss of reading as a childhood pastime. I am now raising four children, all of whom read regularly, all of whom have books that are their well-thumbed old favorites, and friends and classmates who don't read as much as they do. MY children absolutely refuse to LOVE the books I loved, but then I don't read & love all of their favorites, either. Books will always be an entirely different type of imaginary world than TV or video, because your mind must make its own pictures of the settings, the characters, even the props in the story line. There will always be value in having a "place" you can go completely on your own, which no one else can share in quite the same way.
