But it seems to be an uphill battle to even get our grandchildren to try to OPEN a book, much less to READ it.

Do you think so? Although it's too early to tell, as they are only three and a bit and can't read yet, my grand-twins absolutely love being read to and love books, return to them again and again, and altogether have a major book habit. Okay, that's just two boys, but I believe that if you make the assumption that children now will like good books, they probably will. The main difference with earlier generations is the existence of competing media, especially TV, but I don't see it as a cause for despair. As you say, the Harry Potter books have turned millions of new people on to books (although after the first one, I find them to be a one-trick pony, boring and unreadable, and I have tried). I'm never sure that, of itself, reading books is a good thing. But it opens up a huge potential, certainly.

But the magic we felt, somehow is not what our new generations are experiencing.

I think that it's an assumption that people make, but I'm sure it's wrong. All right, children now might not connect enthusiastically with precisely the same stories that we did, but I'm quite sure that they have their own experience of literary magic.
