Indeed tastes do differ. In this case, I'm with Alan - I loved the Hornblower books (and still do) but was completely stopped by the first of the Aubrey-Maturin books I tried (and like Alan, I can't remember which it was, although I suspect it may have been the first chronologically given my general preference). And also like Alan, I enjoyed the film - quite unusual for me, as I am NOT a film person and generally avoid watching movies as much as possible.
