I started reading naval historical fiction with C.S. Forester's Hornblower when I was a teenager, since then I have come to love Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin books. Twenty completed books (plus one posthumous fragment) telling the story of a friendship between a naval captain and a ship's surgeon through their joint careers and adventures at sea and ashore. Someone once suggested that if one of Jane Austen's naval brothers had written books they would be like this.
I suppose the sailing could be considered a continuation of the Swallows and Amazons!
