For what its worth, my take has been that the young single Miss pre-Dixon had been "in service", possibly with a wealthy family with Lake District connections and had travelled with them as part of the household to wherever the D's mother lived and then had obtained a position with the D's mother's family as a nanny/nurse.

She and Mr Dixon met on one of her return trips to see her family (or maybe knew each other as children in the same village) and when they married, she left service and became a farmer's wife, and was able to add to their income by having holiday guests.
