Most houses would have had a fireplace in the main downstairs rooms and a smaller fireplace in the bedrooms. They would have burned whatever fuel was cheapest or most abundant. My town dwelling grandparents burned coal and my village dwelling grandparents burned wood. Usually the coal fireplaces were smaller so the original ones were wood with coal grates inserted as a modernisation.

Most often the fireplaces were on exterior walls with four or so fireplaces feeding through separate flues to one chimney stack. It would be possible to have a fireplace on an interior wall but that would make the wall thicker than usual to accommodate the flue (at least around the flue) taking up room space.

The kitchen would have had a range with probably a hotwater heater built in (to get back to the true purpose of Tarboard the discussion of BP).
