I think what you are seeing now (and I as well with my grandchild) is the massive decline in actual learning educational standards since the 1930s to 1960's (when standards remained reasonably consistent) to the present day.
A don at Cambridge I was talking to some time ago. said that nowadays the actual learning standard of knowledge acquired when children were say 15/16 in the 1950s is more than those currently leaving university with a 2nd/3rd class honours at age 21/22.

Obviously this is not the whole picture, as people have much easier access to factual knowledge through their computer systems and are hopefully more able to use that knowledge constructively.

Although I do remember that my parents who were educated in the 1920s/30s always seemed to have much more factual knowledge in their heads than I ever had. Perhaps with all our computer aids our brain become lazy.
