When I first read S&A (aged 7, in 1970) there was no way John was as ancient as 13 or above.
Titty is regarded, along with Roger, as one of the young ones: so there's nothing stopping her from being 8-and-a-bit during S&A, allowing Susan to be 10.5 and John just (early summer) turned 12.
Health & Safety would no doubt have issues with overnight camping, sailing and fires at these ages, but then we've known that all along.
(And just what is it with plumbing on Tarboard? If it's not Beckfoot, it's Mrs Walker's... :-o )
