Re varnish - have you tried "boat soup"? It's a mixture of linseed oil, real turpentine, and ???. Mentionned on the pages about AR's boats (I'll try to ID the third ingredient - it will be in my garage). It doesn't form a hard shell, bit soaks into the wood. You just keep topping it up say every year. I've done this with "Titty" and it works well.
