What a splendid picture, Peter. There is a working 1/76th scale model of Dog Kennel Hill with its trams that appears at London Transport exhibitions sometimes.
The horses must have suffered drgging their buses and trams up the Hill. Far better to go by tram. Horse drawn trams on this route were replaced by electric ones in 1906 and the last electric tram went in 1952.

It is possible that AR took this route on one of his circuitous walks late at night going home to Balham. Although he was more likely to go further west via Kennington and Clapham.
I wonder if the the ivy covered pub still remains? It has proably lost it's ivy and may have been renamed - although I hope not.
