Australian seamen flying to join a ship had to travel first class (all ranks) and had to be accomodated in a five star hotel for two nights to get over the jet lag before starting work. This was in the 1980's.

Australian dockers acheived a throughput of eight containers an hour using shore gear when our ships in PNG ports using their own gear and Papuan dockers were getting 17. And don't start me on the Painters and Dockers (I think those who ran that outfit were mostly locked up, later).

Did I mention "embarrassment money" for dischaging WC pedestals?

Right, back to the topic, yes, I think that boys would have worn ties, but note that Mr Farland is wearing stiff collars - which nobody would have worn whilst camping - to the office every day.
