And recall that Mr. Jackson's rowing boat was large enough to hold him, Mother and the four hay bags being used as mattresses in SA. There was also a fair bit more, as he brought up a couple more loads after the haybags came up.

I think you'd find the rowing boats to be of "the usual form", relatively long and narrowish (but wide enough for two children on each thwart). The long, narrow form, once set moving, would carry way well.
