I just happen to be reading 'Big Six', (I should claim to be doing research as 'Big Six' will be the subject of the Autumn edition of The Outlaw) and in Chapter 2, page 31 in my Cape edition, "George Owdon and his friend strolled past, smoking cigarettes." Presumably the friend is Ralph Strakey.

I noticed this passage as I hadn't taken on board before that any young people smoked. I wonder if AR wrote this in as a way of showing that they were try to be 'big', which is mainly why young people today still smoke, or simply to emphasise that they were significantly older than the Death and Glories.

Incidentally, I can't see that Strakey is named until Chapter 32 (p355) though George calls him Ralph in Ch 29 (p333)

The other thing that hadn't registered was that Stakey wasn't a Horning lad. Ch.1 (Cape p.17):
"Hear that George Owdon?" he (Pete) whispered.
"I hear him," said Bill.
"What's that other?" said Pete.
"Same sort," said Bill. "He's visiting at George's uncle's."
