In Swallowdale, you get the idea that Mrs. Blackett and Captain Flint are very well-off, because:
- they keep a horse and carriage
- they dress for dinner (and make Nancy and Peggy do the same)
- they have both a cook and a housemaid
- Captain Flint was "dreadfully smartly dressed" when steering the launch
later on, the carriage disappears and they only have cook, no housemaid, but they still have a telephone and a car (even if an old one). I always assumed Captain Flint's father (the great aunt's brother) had left them a lot of money and they were just the local rich family. It helps the stories along because it makes Captain Flint available to "be useful as an uncle" instead of having to go to some job every day.
