Personally, I didn't discover SA until adulthood. Would I have enjoyed it as a child? Probably yes, as I was a bookworm.
As an American, I'm not really sure about what 'the local council estate' implies, but my feeling is that these are children who were not raised to be readers, and had not learned how to use their imaginations. These children might very well actively dislike a book that required them to imagine lives that were totally foreign to them. To them, it would be work, rather than recreation. After all, it's so much easier to flip on the television and have your stories spoon-fed to you. Let's hope that those children, now adults, have learned to enjoy reading, and are enjoying SA or whatever other books call to them.
